Should you hire a pro?

Probably! Here are some factors to consider when deciding whether or not to hang wallpaper yourself.

Experience + Tools

Do you have the experience and tools necessary to paint a wall well? Most wallpapers require painting skills and tools due to the need to apply adhesive to the back of the wallpaper or to the wall itself depending on the product type. Painting skills will keep your home from getting damaged by adhesives and keep your wallpaper firmly and consistently adhered to the wall. One exception to this is peel and stick wallpaper! However, the other two points below do apply to all wall coverings, including peel and stick.

Experience + Tools (2)

Do you have the experience and tools necessary to take accurate measurements and make clean cuts? Wallpaper installation requires accurate measurements to ensure you are turning your wallpaper roll into appropriate sized panels. This gets trickier if you have a patterned wallpaper - you can not simply start one panel where the last one ended, the pattern has a repeat that needs to be taken into account. Quality installation also requires the ability to make nice clean cuts against the ceiling, baseboard, and walls.

Texture or
High Cost Wallpaper

Is your wallpaper expensive? Hire a professional! Very few DIYers get wallpaper installation done well and it can’t be returned/refunded due to poor installation.

Do you have textured walls? If so, you will likely want to have your walls sanded and skimmed smooth before installation. Refer to our information on skim coating here.
